Reedereien beschäftigen sich in erster Linie mit dem Einsatz und der Unterhaltung, aber auch mit der Besatzung und der Ausrüstung eines Schiffes.
Eine Linienreederei ist eine Reederei, welche sich in der Linienschifffahrt befindet. Die Linienreederei muss bei ihren Linienfahrten nicht unbedingt diese Schiffe besitzen, sondern kann die benötigten Schiffe und Container von anderen Unternehmen chartern.
Laut Handelsgesetzbuch ist ein Reeder ein Eigentümer des ihm zur Verfügung gestellten Schiffes zur Durchführung
seines Erwerbes.
Daher kann ein Reeder eine eigenständige Person, aber auch eine aus mehreren Gesellschaftern bestehende Institution sein.
Eine Spedition als Containerlinie muss nicht unbedingt einen eigenen Containerfuhrpark besitzen.
Um die Unkostenspanne so gering wie möglich zu halten, chartert diese Spedition einen oder mehrere Container für den benötigten Zeitraum.
Mit der Unterhaltung und Reparatur muss sich nur die Containerfirma beschäftigen.
