Sterling was founded in 1989 by Gerry Hermer an ex RAF Helicopter SAR Flight Commander. With the backing of two major shareholders the company invested in its own single Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter, operating from a small hangar and base at Norwich Airport.
Initially relying on small local filming tasks and pleasure flying the company soon grew its client base and expanded with the acquisition of further helicopters and aircrew.
The company formed a second base at Silverstone Racing Circuit in Northamptonshire with contract work with the circuit and locally based racing car teams.
It was soon clear that the company needed to continue its expansion and offer twin-engine helicopters and a Eurocopter AS355 and Bolkow Bo105 soon joined the fleet. By the mid 90’s the company had a fleet of four helicopters based between Norwich and Silverstone.
Clients were now expressing interest in the use of fixed-wing aircraft to take them further into Europe, so a Beech 90 King Air was acquired and offered alongside the fleet of helicopters. In 1995 Sterling moved into a purpose built hangar and office complex at Norwich Airport giving more scope for future expansion and the progression of its JAR145 engineering approvals.
Further contracts and an increasing client base wishing for an evermore-diverse range of tasks have kept the fleet continually expanding to meet their demands. Today Sterling employs 35 personnel including 15 pilots, 5 flight observers, 9 engineers and tech-record staff, and 6 flight and ground operations crew. The fleet consists of 10 helicopters and 5 fixed-wing aeroplanes from Norwich and four other satellite bases. Turnover is expected to be in excess of 4 million pounds per year and future expansion is set to take Sterling into the larger aircraft market and GA aircraft handling.
